Finland, 2017 - Following a major Euro 110 million conversion in 2015, the paper machine at the Stora Varkaus mill is now operating as a 390,000 tpy virgin-fiber based brown and white top containerboard machine. The new board machine was designed to balance perfectly with the existing integrated pulp mill, power plant and water treatment. In total about seventy suppliers were involved in the conversion for various specialized tasks.
For the wet end modification, AFT's compact POM system was chosen based on proven results at sister mills within the company. Because the paper machine wire section was a bit short, two POMp730s were chosen to provide adequate dearation and address the mill's concerns about drainage capacity and higher speed. AFT also delivered a 3-stage back ply screening room combining three MaxFlow units in the primary and coarse positions and a tertiary MaxSaver screen for fiber recovery. Without the need for traditional storage tanks and a deculator, the POM system runs smoothly with much lower water and energy usage. Benefits include no contaminant build up, faster grade changes, less entrained air, and fewer defects and subsequent complaints from customers.
This project was implemented without the engineering, capital and running costs of traditional storage tank and deculator installations. The mill now has full functional capacity and the flexibility they need in a very compact space. Through this successful machine conversion, they are positioned to gain market share in the growing world containerboard market.
